Rare and strikingly beautiful, this Krobo bench by Torbjørn Afdal shows what rosewood can do when design steps back and lets the material speak. The long surface glows with warm tones and a rich patina, its grain running the full length of the piece, while the raised edges frame it with quiet precision. Produced by Bruksbo, Norway, in the 1960s.
The whole piece is made of solid wood. The structure is deliberately minimal: a long, rectangular rosewood top with raised edges, carried by sturdy legs and a crossbar that gives it stability and a clean, architectural profile. The three planter boxes, in the same solid rosewood with a black interior lining, are an integral part of the design. They can be placed on the bench or moved elsewhere, to hold plants or serve as decorative storage. Its ultra-minimal aesthetic made the Krobo uniquely flexible: it can be a bench, a side table or a display surface, whatever the room asks of it. Afdal (1917-1999) is remembered as one of Norway's most prolific and respected designers, and his work was collected by Jackie Kennedy for the White House and by Emperor Hirohito, among others.
In very good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. The rosewood surface has been professionally restored and is very well preserved, retaining its rich colour and smooth texture, with only slight wear. The black linings of the boxes show minor signs of use but remain in great condition. The bench and the three boxes each bear the manufacturer's stamp.
